Jack Litwak In The News: Phoenix Fox10
There’s been a lot of news about how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the criminal justice system. Between an increase in some violent crimes nationwide and a backlogged court system, Phoenix has not been spared.
FOX10 Phoenix has reported that a missed deadline has caused Maricopa County’s Attorney’s Office to drop nearly 200 criminal cases. This lapse in the court’s mandate has caused a commotion in Phoenix and Maricopa County. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office handles prosecuting all felonies in the county. They also handle prosecuting some misdemeanors and they provide legal counsel and services to county agencies and departments.
180 misdemeanor cases had to be dropped by the Attorney’s Office because of a missed deadline. These cases, from 2020, included DUIs and domestic violence charges. Jack believes this mishandling is not a surprise. He told FOX10 “In the state of everything going on and what we’ve seen in the last year of that office, it doesn’t surprise me.”
